18/20 - Raymond Chan

Full, dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is full with ripe, plush dark red and black berried fruit and plum aromas lifted by floral fragrances and a suggestion of esters.

The aromatics grow in intensity with aeration, revealing subtle, fresh thyme herb notes. Medium-full bodied, the palate features lusciously sweet fruit flavours of black cherries, berries and plums along with fresh herbal elements.

The mouthfeel is bright and lively with fresh acidity enlivening the fruit, providing good energy and vitality. The wine is elegantly proportioned and follows a fine-grained tannin line that carries to a long, lingering red and black fruited finish. This is a fresh, lively, sweet, black-fruited Pinot Noir with a fine tannin line. Serve with poultry and pork dishes and Asian fare over the next 5-6 years.

In the south of New Zealand there lies a beautiful and powerful place called Central Otago. This land, dominated by rivers and mountains and shaped by glaciers, has become the most intriguing place in the new world to grow Pinot noir...Akitu, in the Maori language, means the summit, the apex or the highest point, which is a fitting name given their vines are 380 metres above sea level. In short, they are right up there, right on the grape growing edge, against the Alps and in the southern most wine-making region on earth. Their entire vineyard is dedicated to the fickle mistress, Pinot Noir and the very best of their harvest makes Akitu. Extraordinarily, they have waited over a decade for their vines to settle and to start to present their wonderful true character. Their inaugural 2012 vintage was an immediate sell-out in New Zealand and the latest vintages are award-winning.

Region

Central Otago is a beautiful and powerful place situated on the South Island of New Zealand with land dominated by rivers and mountains and shaped by glaciers. Part of the Otago region, the climate here goes from one extreme to the other and is the coldest yet driest part of the country which allows for a deep concentration of fruit flavours in the grapes. In this region vines are planted in desert conditions, however the plethora of rivers running through make it ideal for vineyard irrigation. Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir all grow incredibly well in this area.
