Those eagle eyed Decanter readers may have spotted the unprecedented score for a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (August 2017 Edition).

The Marlborough producer, Auntsfield has been awarded a colossal 98 points for their 2016 single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, the same score awarded by Decanter for the 2016 Bordeaux En-Primeur’s – Chateaux Mouton Rothschild, Pichon Lalande & Figeac...

98 Points - Cameron Douglas MW (Decanter.com) "Classic mix of fresh and dried herbs, fine citrus and tropical passion fruit and peach hints. Encapsulates what's at the heart of Marlborough's Sauvignon Blanc message - energy, precise attack and flavours that last. Classic."

98 Points - Bob Campbell  "Weighty, quite intense red capsicum, gooseberry and nectarine flavours, also showing impressive purity and length. Rich and flavoursome with typical weight and concentration for a wine from this clay-rich-sub-region. Tropical fruit, passion fruit, guava and apricot flavours plus a seasoning of brioche. It's quite a mouthful."

98 Points - Melanie Brown "Beautifully poised and extravagant: gooseberry, green grass and elderflower, crunch acid and harmonious, good length. Yum!"

Region

New Zealand is split between the North Island and South Island and the Marlborough region is situated in the North of the South Island. The climate here is the hottest in the country meaning that this wine producing region is expanding quickly. Of course, Sauvignon Blanc does well here and is increasingly becoming more and more popular due to its naturally herbaceous character and lean and refreshing style much loved by Western wine drinkers. Wineries Greywacke and Dog Point both have delicious Sauvignon Blanc wines with typical Marlborough characteristics. Red wines, mainly Pinot Noir also grow well in this region and an excellent example of a Pinot Noir from this area is the Akitu Pinot Noir which comes highly recommended from Vinorium staff!
