Producer

Matt Thompson, International White Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirits Competition is no stranger to our wine buyer and owner Stuart, as their relationship goes back over a decade when Stuart first offered wines from New Zealand’s Saint Clair estate, for which Matt is still the consulting winemaker. Fast forward over forty vintages in vastly different wine regions around the world, and the time has come to launch Matt’s own wine range, Blank Canvas, which represents his journey as a winemaker. Matt’s background in science defines the parameters of his winemaking canvas, allowing creativity to flow within those blank bounds with brush and palette. Blank Canvas is about creating alternate styles of wine using exceptional varieties and unprecedented techniques.

Blank Canvas, Marlborough, New Zealand

Region

New Zealand is split between the North Island and South Island and the Marlborough region is situated in the North of the South Island. The climate here is the hottest in the country meaning that this wine producing region is expanding quickly. Of course, Sauvignon Blanc does well here and is increasingly becoming more and more popular due to its naturally herbaceous character and lean and refreshing style much loved by Western wine drinkers. Wineries Greywacke and Dog Point both have delicious Sauvignon Blanc wines with typical Marlborough characteristics. Red wines, mainly Pinot Noir also grow well in this region and an excellent example of a Pinot Noir from this area is the Akitu Pinot Noir which comes highly recommended from Vinorium staff!
