Burn Cottage

A relatively new kid on the block, Burn Cottage is the brainchild of the larger than life character, Marquis Sauvage.  Marquis and his wife Dianne were on their way back from a trip to the Mornington Peninsula in Australia, when they stumbled across the stunning region and a location set in the foothills of the Pisa Range in Central Otago (New Zealand). In January 2002 they purchased the property at an auction, not knowing that several other prominent winemakers had been interested in the site for quite some time.

The Sauvage Family also own the celebrated Koehler Ruprecht estate in the Pfalz region of Germany as well as farming cattle, cotton and wheat in Oberlin, Kansas and in Australia. With this farming knowledge the Sauvages are able to appreciate the importance of time and soil quality, especially in a new agricultural venture. They brought in winemaker Ted Lemon, (of Littorai fame) and with his experience in vineyard development he established the property with biodynamic principals, a path that has been followed with great commitment and enthusiasm – especially considering that in 2002 Burn Cottage was the only estate to be farming in this way in Central Otago.  With 6 vintages under its belt, Burn Cottage still only produces one wine, its Pinot Noir, but it is one truly great wine. They have also begun to plant small amounts of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling (the Grüner Veltliner planting is from the first generation of this variety released in New Zealand) so we are looking forward to many more great things to come from this winery…
