97 Points - James Halliday

Clones 114 and 115 planted '94, believed to have mutated into a single 'Sangreal' clone, 66% whole bunches, 4 days cold soak, wild yeast open-fermented 8 days, matured in new French oak for 18 months. Deeply coloured, depth and savoury complexity the cornerstones of great pinots. Spices from an Arabian bazaar intermingle sinuously with vibrant berry fruits, a skein of refreshing acidity adding another dimension to a wine that continuously draws saliva from the mouth. It is already a complete wine, its future measured in decades, not years.

Two Winemakers. Two Lines.  One Estate . Father and son team Gary and Nick Farr have gained reputation for some of the best wines in Australia (if not the world) and it is not hard to see why.  Gary Farr was given the distinguished title of “maker of Australia’s best pinot” by legendary wine connoisseur Len Evans, with Gary’s experience gained working as winemaker in wineries such as the infamous Domain Dujac in Burgundy as well as Cristom Vineyards in Oregon.

However, Gary’s son Nick, is also gaining his own reputation and it is important to note that both generations have very different winemaking styles for the two lines:  ‘By Farr’ headed up by Gary and ‘Farr Rising’ by Nick. Despite working side-by-side and often as a team, they are not afraid to go head-to-head when opinions differ.

Wines from By Farr and Farr Rising are extremely sought after, capturing the praise and acclaim of critics and wine lovers both in Australia and overseas. Any releases by the Farr boys are eagerly anticipated, and with their small quantities of single vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that rank with Australia's best, it is not hard to see why these fantastic wines are so popular and vintages sell out so quickly.

Region

Despite being the second smallest state in Australia, Victoria is home to over 600 wineries, more than any other wine-producing state. However, Victoria does not produce the most wine, as rather than producing mass quantities of cheaper wine, its wineries tend to be smaller and more boutique in style. The cool climate here produced by the coastal areas means that a wide range of wines can be made, from stunningly complex Chardonnay’s and delicate Pinot Noirs in the Yarra Yarra Valley, to savoury and rich Shiraz from Heathcote and iconic fortified wines from Rutherglen.

Our favourite producers from the Victoria region include By Farr and from the Heathcote area, Wild Duck Creek.
