Victoria - Canterbury

Canterbury

Spanning nearly 200km of the south island’s east coast, Canterbury had its first vineyard plantings in 1978. A dry region with hot summers tempered by the cool breezes coming from the eastern coast, low rainfall due to the westerly Southern Alps and three distinct sub-regions, the Canterbury plains, Waipara Valley, and most recently Waikari Valley. Canterbury has various grape varieties, although Pinot Noir dominates and with varying soils found, gravel and clay to the north with more limestone found to the South, the styles of wines produced also vary.
