Carmenère

Widely cultivated in the Medoc back in the early 18th century, Carménère is a dark-skinned, late-ripening grape variety that is rarely found in the vineyards of Bordeaux today after the phylloxera louse arrived in Europe in the 1860’s almost wiping it out.

It needs high levels of sunshine and a warm Summer to reach its potential, but in the right environment can produce fine, deeply coloured and full-bodied red wines – the variety is Chile’s premium grape after Chilean vignerons mistakenly took cuttings from Bordeaux pre-phylloxera believing it to be Merlot!
