92 Points - Neal Martin

An impressive showing of Batailley, this is the best bottle that I have encountered. It is rather closed and introspective on the nose with touches of mulberry, wild strawberry and gravel. Fine definition, opening up all the time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft entry, fine tannins, lovely caressing texture, the Merlot counterbalancing the austere finish. This is very impressive.

Producer

Château Batailley is situated in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. The name Batailley comes from the French word ‘bataille’ meaning battle, as it was on the land that the château sits today that the French reclaimed the famous Château Latour from the English during The 100 Years' War. Alongside this rich history, vines were planted on this significant battlefield and it is these old vines that give the wines from Château Batailley their famous intensive, well-structured and cassis driven flavour, classic to Pauillac. These wines are a typical Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

Region

Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand.

Many top wines are sold ‘En Primeur’ meaning that they are sold in the barrel prior to bottling. Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
