As I have consistently written in the past, this limited production cuvee, from a 12-acre site that contains a parcel of extremely old vines, 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, is meant to last three decades or more. Tasting like a liqueur of rocks interwoven with crème de cassis, espresso roast, toasty oak, and enormous levels of tannin, it is neither out of balance nor astringent. It is a concentrated, backward, impeccably balanced St.-Emilion made with an uncompromising view of the craft of winemaking. It displays superb intensity, a fabulous texture, a foreboding, tannic overlay, incredibly ripe, pure fruit, and perfectly aligned acidity and tannin. Forget if for a decade, and consume it between 2020-2040.

Producer

As with many Bordeaux Châteaux, Château Clos de Sarpe is steeped with history. Set on the Right Bank, this St Emillion château is owned and run today by the Beyney family, the third generation to continue wine production and being family run, the estate is independent with traditional wine making values. The production here is very small with less than 4 hectares of biodynamic vineyards, planted with 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. In 1997 the estate began production of a second wine, Charles de Sarpe. Wines from here are powerful with high tannins, strong minerality and with complex and concentrated flavours.

Region

Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand. 

Many top wines are sold ‘En Primeur’ meaning that they are sold in the barrel prior to bottling. Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
