The finest d’Armailhac I have tasted to date, the 2009 is largely Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) blended with a big wallop of Merlot (25%) and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Its dense purple color is followed by a big, sweet kiss of asphalt, black currants, mocha, barbecue smoke, cedar and spice. This medium to full-bodied, well-made, impressively endowed Pauillac should drink well for 20+ years.

Château d'Armailhac (previously named Château Mouton-d'Armailhacq, a nod to its ownership by Mouton branch of the Rothschild family) sits proudly next to First Growth Château Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac and was previously part of Mouton’s enormous vineyards. The wine, aged in oak casks, combines finesse and elegance with powerful, well-structured tannins. Compared to other wines in the Mouton stable, the d'Armailhac is known for its charm and fragrance which sets it apart from its Pauillac neighbours. 


We can highly recommend the Château d'Armailhac 2009 which Robert Parker calls ‘The finest d’Armailhac I have tasted to date’.

Region

Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand.

Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
