96 Points - Robert Parker

Dense purple, with classic notes of cedar and lead pencil shavings as well as gobs of black currants and licorice, the wine has a full-bodied mouthfeel with fabulous precision and density. It also possesses a long, silky finish with moderately high tannins, but they are ripe and well-integrated. The wood is clearly pushed to the background in this dense, full-bodied Pauillac, which should drink beautifully for 30+ years.

Producer

‘It would have been nonsense not to acquire such a great neighbouring vineyard.’ - Baron Eric de Rothschild. Set in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux, Château Duhart Milon (formally known as Château Duhart-Milon-Rothschild) is classified as a 4ème Cru Classé. It is owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild who has a vast portfolio including l’Évangile and Rieussec in Bordeaux and projects stretching as far as Chile, Argentina and now China. The name Duhart comes from a man who allegedly was a pirate under Louis XV’s reign and lived in the property during his retirement. The ‘pirate’s house’ can be seen on its labels today with the estate passed through 5 owners in only 25 years until 1962, which it was purchased by The Rothschilds. When they took over, the Rothschilds extended and replanted the vineyards and rebuilt the cellars and winery and now the expert Lafite team lead by wine manager Charles Chevallier and Eric de Rothschild himself have reached the highest levels of quality of wine which is a blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot and is matured in barrels for 18 months. Moulin de Duhart is the Château’s second wine.

Château Duhart Milon

Region

Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand.

Many top wines are sold ‘En Primeur’ meaning that they are sold in the barrel prior to bottling. Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
