Taste & Aroma

Score:92

The Moulin St Georges is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that was picked on the 11th and 12th October respectively. Apparently there was a little bit of rain that they hoped would stop...but it didn’t. The nose is floral and generous with hints of fruitcake infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, rounded entry. It is silky smooth and there is beautiful delineation and poise towards the finish as one often founds with this often under-estimated Saint Emilion. Wonderful tension here, mainly thank to the 3.55pH – great persistency. Tasted April 2013.

Producer

The Vauthier family and winemaker Phillipe Baillarguest are putting as much effort into producing the best Château Moulin Saint-Georges as they are with Château Ausone itself. Moulin Saint-Georges is produced in the same way; super-strict fruit selection and the wine is matured in 100% new French barriques from anywhere between 18 to 20 months. This is a truly fabulous property and their wine is world-class in our opinion...

Region

Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand.

Many top wines are sold ‘En Primeur’ meaning that they are sold in the barrel prior to bottling. Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
