100 Points - Robert Parker

My notes essentially read the same every year, even though the bottlings are non-vintage and I taste the most recent releases. Consistency and greatness are the norm at this Rutherglen winery. The average age is 7-10 years for the regular cuvees, about 70 years for the grand cuvees, and the ancient rare cuvees date back to soleras from 1890. The Muscadelle (Tokay) reveals caramel, toffee, fig, prune, raisiny notes, an incredible, unctuous texture, and amazing zesty acidity which keeps it from being cloying. It is redundant to keep repeating the same tasting notes, so readers will have to take my word for it ... this is one of the world’s most remarkable dessert wines, and is worth every effort to latch on to a half bottle or so.

Producer

Rutherglen has a long established record for making the finest examples of Muscat in Australia, if not the world. The 'Rare' designation is reserved for exceptional material dating over 100+ years of age. They are renowned for their aromatic complexity and full, deep flavours and rich texture. The tiny family-owned Chambers Rosewood Winery has collected a string of awards since it was first established in 1858.

The wine is now made by sixth generation family member Stephen Chambers, who took over the reins from his famous father Bill. Through the extended solera aging process (fractional blending in such a way that the finished product is a mixture of ages, with the average age gradually increasing as the process continues over many years), the wine is relatively stable to changes and ready to drink now. Bill Chambers and son Stephen, head up the winemaking team at Chambers Rosewood at Rutherglen in Victoria's for their highly prized Muscats, Tokays and fortified wines. The "Rare" fortified wines are nothing less than national treasures, with famed wine writer Robert Parker writing "these are some of the world's most remarkable dessert wines." and regularly rewarding them with perfect scores of 100 points.

Region

Rutherglen is a wine producing region in north-eastern Victoria and has a long established record for making the finest examples of Muscat in Australia, if not the world. Its Muscats and Tokays are internationally recognised for their quality and unique style. One of the contributing factors to Rutherglen’s unique appeal is the climate; a variety of soils, with warm summers and cool evenings give grapes in this region a huge opportunity to ripen. While the area does offer a range of red and white table wines indicative of the region, it remains infamous for its incredible fortified wines and blockbuster reds. We can highly recommend both the Chambers Rosewood Grand Muscat and the Calliope Muscat – both awarded a near perfect 99 points from Robert Parker!
