92 Points - Robert Parker

Chocolate, espresso roast, plum, fig, and black currant aromas are followed by a dense, rich, full-bodied Pomerol displaying superb purity, elegance, and noticeable but ripe tannin. There is not an astringent element to be found in this savory, layered, opulent 2006. It is ideal for drinking over the next 12-15+ years.

Taste & Aroma

Score:93

The Clos l’Eglise 2006 is showing so well with exuberant dark berry fruit, orange blossom, a touch of star anis and hints of liquorice. The palate is beautifully balanced with ripe, succulent dark cherry, Dorset plum and summer fruit. Like the previous vintage it is silky smooth in texture and very harmonious. This is an outstanding, vivacious Clos l’Eglise that dares run the 2005 close!

Producer

This Pomerol wine has been highly rated by critics, for producing consistently good quality wines. The estate is owned by Sylvaine Garcin Cathiard (sister of the owner of the famous Graves property Château Smith Haut Lafitte) who bought the property from the Moreau family in 1997. Since 1998, scores from the critics have risen year on year, with the 2009 vintage being given a close to perfect score of 98 Points from Robert Parker, with bottles of this vintages reaching well over £150 per bottle.

Region

Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand.

Many top wines are sold ‘En Primeur’ meaning that they are sold in the barrel prior to bottling. Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
