The 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Le Clos du Caillou is near the top of the heap in the vintage, and is a brilliant wine. Giving up classy creme de cassis, black raspberry, ground herbs and creamy licorice, it has full-bodied richness and depth to go with an open, sexy, supple style that’s hard to resist. The tannin here is present however, but is polished and sweet, so it will evolve gracefully going forward.

Region

The Rhône is a wine region in southern France situated in the Rhône River valley and is generally divided into two sections – the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône. The Northern Rhône is famous for its red wines made from the Syrah grape occasionally blended with a little Viognier and white wines made from blends of Marsanne and Roussanne as well as varietal Viognier wines. The most famous of these wines are the Syrah’s from Hermitage, Crozes Hermitage, Cote Rotie and Cornas and white wines from Condrieu, Chateau Grillet and Hermitage. In the Southern Rhône wines are generally produced from blends of grapes – the more well-known areas of production being Chateaueneuf du Pape and the more reasonable prices wines from the Côtes du Rhone. Here red wines are made from blends of several varietals, more often than not these include Grenache Noir, Mourvedre and Syrah (known as the GSM blend). We can highly recommend the Crozes Hermitage from Georges Reynaud which also received a gold medal from Decanter.
