Mungo Park was an 18th century Scotsman who explored Nigeria, West Africa. Mungo Park comes from a single vineyard series that owes its existence to the many great blocks of old vine Shiraz that have remained since the early settlers arrived. The vines are 80 year old gnarled Shiraz. The Mungo Park vineyard is found in one of the coolest climate sections of the Northern Barossa Valley – the Moppa, just down the road from the Kalimna Vineyard, which is the mother vineyard to 'Penfolds Grange'.

Jonathan Maltus (the founder of Colonial Estate) is probably the closest you will ever get to a real rockstar winemaker. Iconic, ridiculously talented and the first Englishman in Bordeaux to win a perfect score from Robert Parker for his 2010 Château Dome Le Dôme (we sold out at £2,200 per case). His ’09 received 99 points!

Not content with bringing Château Le Dome, Château Teyssier and its satellites to the forefront of modern winemaking in Bordeaux, Jonathan decided to try his hand in Australia by purchasing small blocks of old vines in the Barossa Valley in 2001. These small blocks were in the northern ‘arc’ of the Barossa, focusing on 120 year-old dry-grown vines that have never suffered from phylloxera.

Jonathan and his team's approach to making wines in Australia is old world influenced. This is what separates The Colonial Estate from other wineries around the world. No expense has been spared, with only the finest of winemaking practices and French oak barrels being utilised. In fact, Jonathan has gone to the extreme by importing all his winemaking equipment from St-Emilion: wooden vats, barrels, triage tables etc. as their aim is to produce wines of outstanding stature to set them apart from all the rest...

Region

Situated in South Australia, 60 kilometres northwest of Adelaide, lies the Barossa Valley which has been producing wine since 1842 and these days is recognised as Australia’s quintessential wine region. The hot climate mixed with the ironstone and sandstone soil in the valley, makes excellent growing conditions for grapes and in particular, Shiraz (or Syrah) which classically is full bodied with earthy and spicy notes. Over the last 15 years there has also been an increased interest in the other red Rhone varietals Grenache and Mourvedre. The non-irrigated old vineyards on the cooler west side of the valley are the most treasured and provide fruit for Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds Grange among many other top-quality bottlings.
