Gold Best Cabernet Sauvignon

97 Points - James Halliday - Exceptional crimson-purple; Julian Langworthy has a rare touch, particularly with cabernet and chardonnay, an unlikely couple outside Margaret River, and even within it when Julian's wines are on show. This has the elegance and symmetry of Bordeaux in good vintages had before they were all pumped up on Parkeresque steroids.

96 Points - Stuart McCloskey

A wonderful nose bursting with blackcurrant leaf, eucalyptus and cassis. Medium to full bodied, beautifully polished with fine, silky tannins. The black fruit is ripe, crisp and coats the mouth though with elegance. This is a world class cabernet sauvignon, which would put many ‘top’ 2013 Bordeaux to shame. Delicious now but would certainly reward 5+ years in the cellar.

Producer

Deep Woods Estate wines have definitely stood out from the crowd, although we have struggled to source their stunning wines as they are simply rarely available to the outside world – the majority of bottles are scooped up at the cellar door or sold through their domestic mailing list. But, we tried and tried until we received a small parcel, which are delighted to share with you all. Deep Woods Estate is now firmly fixed in our portfolio of great Australia wines and we are so thrilled to be in a position to offer an annual allocation.

Region

New Zealand is split between the North Island and South Island and the Marlborough region is situated in the North of the South Island. The climate here is the hottest in the country meaning that this wine producing region is expanding quickly. Of course, Sauvignon Blanc does well here and is increasingly becoming more and more popular due to its naturally herbaceous character and lean and refreshing style much loved by Western wine drinkers. Wineries Greywacke and Dog Point both have delicious Sauvignon Blanc wines with typical Marlborough characteristics. Red wines, mainly Pinot Noir also grow well in this region and an excellent example of a Pinot Noir from this area is the Akitu Pinot Noir which comes highly recommended from Vinorium staff!
