97 Points - Ray Jordan, The West Australian, Oct 2016
This remarkable wine has to be one of the buys of the year. It is the finest chardonnay Deep Woods has made and further evidence of how far this Margaret River producer has come. Effortless and refined, with multi layers of flavour. Deep, penetrating palate extends to an extraordinary finish. Subtle, roasted cashew with a creamy middle palate balance understated oak and fine grapefruit flavours. (Best drinking: now to 2023, Alc 13%).

96 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, Oct 2016
Crikey. Everything here is all just so. It’s ripe, but not too ripe. Fresh, but not overly acidic. Smoky and modern, though the fruit isn’t smothered. It has an almond and cashew richness, but retains purity of fruit. Flavours? White peach, barely ripe pineapple, ruby red grapefruit, spice and sweet lime, with a touch of nougat. From sip to swallow, it forms an unbroken line of Chardonnay pleasure. Texture is gently chalky. The finish has length, crunch and comes in high definition. You’d be mad not to. Drink 2017–2014.

96 Points - James Suckling
A terrific chardonnay for this in-form producer. The powerful Margaret River chardonnay muscle has been nicely tamed and then built in the winery to round out with measure and balance. The intense stone fruits and flinty grapefruit aromas are framed in spicy, fresh-cut oak and almost chalky stony nuances. The palate has fleshy fruit that wrenches tight with assertive acid drive and tension. Drink now to 2020+.

Producer

Deep Woods Estate wines have definitely stood out from the crowd, although we have struggled to source their stunning wines as they are simply rarely available to the outside world – the majority of bottles are scooped up at the cellar door or sold through their domestic mailing list. But, we tried and tried until we received a small parcel, which are delighted to share with you all. Deep Woods Estate is now firmly fixed in our portfolio of great Australia wines and we are so thrilled to be in a position to offer an annual allocation.

Region

The Margaret River is situated in South Western Australia, about 200 kilometres south of Perth. This area may grow less than 5% of the country’s grapes but it produces a very significant proportion of the country’s best wine. The climate is Mediterranean, meaning that it is warm enough to make some brilliant Bordeaux blends and Cabernets, yet cool enough for elegant Chardonnays and Semillion.  Margaret River is made up of mainly smaller, boutique producers with over 215 vineyards across the region. One of our favourite producers is from this region; Stella Bella wines. We can highly recommend Suckfizzle Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon which is made from grapes from a single small vineyard in Augusta, Suckfizzle.
