A stunning Sauvignon Blanc which embraces some of the trademark Marlborough characters with floral, citrus and herbal aromas underpinned by a flinty minerality. The palate is harmonious combining concentrated fruit flavours with a savoury complexity. A tight focused acidity draws out the palate for a lingering finish.

Taste & Aroma

Score:91

The 2014 Sauvignon Blanc opens with an incredible intensity of zingy lemon and gooseberry scents with nuances of flint, baker’s yeast and gravel. Medium-bodied with lovely texture, oodles of citrus and stony flavors and a racy acid line, it finishes with fantastic length.

Producer

The wines of Dog Point originate from the experienced and stellar hands of ex-Cloudy Bay magicians Ivan Sutherland and James Healy. A boutique operation which sees Sutherland focusing on care in the vineyard and Healy as winemaker means that in the eyes of many, they are the now the main class act for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. In addition to Sauvignon Blanc the pair also produces idiosyncratic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Wairau Valley’s unique climatic conditions of generous sunshine, extraordinary diurnal range in temperatures and low rainfall conditions. With all of the grapes coming from Sutherland’s own vineyards, quality control is at its most meticulous with hand harvesting employed over the more widely adopted machine assisted approach taken elsewhere. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts brings an exuberant and crystalline fruit purity hailed by all who taste them. Never dull, always impressive, Dog Point’s wines personify a real benchmark in outstanding winemaking in Marlborough, New Zealand.

Region

New Zealand is split between the North Island and South Island and the Marlborough region is situated in the North of the South Island. The climate here is the hottest in the country meaning that this wine producing region is expanding quickly. Of course, Sauvignon Blanc does well here and is increasingly becoming more and more popular due to its naturally herbaceous character and lean and refreshing style much loved by Western wine drinkers. Wineries Greywacke and Dog Point both have delicious Sauvignon Blanc wines with typical Marlborough characteristics. Red wines, mainly Pinot Noir also grow well in this region and an excellent example of a Pinot Noir from this area is the Akitu Pinot Noir which comes highly recommended from Vinorium staff!
