Region

Alsace is a wine making region on the France / Germany border and along with Austria and Germany produces some of the most noted dry Rieslings in the world. Its wines are influenced by its German neighbour and as a result it is the only Appellation d’Origine Controlee region in France to produce mostly varietal labelled wines, such as Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat and Gewurztraminer (these are also commonly referred to as the Noble Grapes of Alsace). While Riesling and Muscat are often made in a dry style in Alsace, single variety Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer are traditionally made in an off-dry style. There are also a large number of late harvest wines produced in Alsace and there are two late harvest classifications; Vendage Tardives (only produced with the 4 noble grapes of Alsace and often made with grapes showing characteristics of botrytis) and Selection de Grains Nobles (a strict selection of late harvest similar in style to a Hungarian Tokaji or a Sauternes from Bordeaux). We can highly recommend the wines from Rolly Gassmann and Rieffel.
