97 Points – James Halliday

Shiraz from 100+yo vines, wild yeast open-fermented, matured in 70% new French oak. It proclaims its extreme class from the first whiff of blackberry, plum and licorice, but equally quickly disavows what might be characterised as a McLaren Vale cliche: overt dark chocolate. Instead spicy, savoury, beautifully structured tannins (and quality oak) add both textural and flavour complexity - all this with perfect line, length and balance.

Hardy’s is a name that has been intrinsically entwined with Australian wine for over a century and a half. Thomas Hardy is generally regarded as the fathers of the South Australian wine industry and was one of the early pioneers of McLaren Vale wine, planting some of the earliest vines in region dating back to the mid 1800’s. Since those early plantings, the company has continued to grow through several generations of the family. The widow of Tom Mayfield Hardy, Eileen Hardy, who took up the mantle for a considerable part of the 21st century is a name very familiar to us through their flagship range of wines name Eileen Hardy, featuring a Chardonnay, a Pinot Noir and Shiraz, the 2015’s we are exclusive on.

Region

McLaren Vale

McLaren Vale is situated south of The Barossa Valley in South Eastern Australia. The local climates vary enormously according to altitude and exposure to the cooling sea breezes. Red grapes flourish here due to the warm climate and varied soil type and the region is best known for soft and juicy Shiraz, old-vine Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The climate is similar to that of the Mediterranean climate with four clear seasons. We can highly recommend the producers Kay Brothers, Clarendon Hills and Shirvington Estate from whom we have some fantastic wines.

Zalto Denk-Art Universal Glass

For richer, oaked Sauvignon Blancs such as The Fuder, white Graves or Semillon/Sauvignon blends. For young and non-vintage Champagne we recommend Zalto Universal. However, the Zalto Universal is a very good all-rounder, designed for all types of wines but may not maximize the potential of certain wine as much as the Bordeaux or Burgundy glass.
