Eva Fricke is a well-established young star, growing only Riesling on the steep slopes of Lorch in Germany's Rheingau region. Some of the vines are more than 45 years old and all Eva Fricke's wines show the minerality of the slate and quartzite soils of the area. This wine is full of citrus flavours with a beautiful mineral finish. The opulent peach-fruit nose shows a tiny hint of sweetness and the exciting tang of passion fruit. Lemon-yellow in colour, this is a delicate and poised wine. Showing hints of peach, tropical fruit and minerality, the foundation of this Riesling is its superb balance between its acidity and a touch of residual sugar: Delicious!

Stuart McCloskey

Producer

The daughter of two doctors, Eva Fricke was born in a small village in Lower Saxony. She was for a long time winemaker at Leitz, one of the best known Rheingau wineries, after her passion for wine was born during a practical training visit on a vineyard in South Africa. Her own project began while she was still employed there and in 2011 she had grown to the point that she is now organically producing a range of expressive Rieslings from her winery in Keidrich that show the minerality of the sale and quartzite soils of the area.

Region

The Rheingau or Rhine region is in the state of Hesse, North of Frankfurt in Germany. It is a south-facing slab of vineyards situated on gentle slopes which lead down to the river Rhine that flows through the region. Many vines have been planted along the banks of the river in south-facing vineyards protected from the chill winds by the Taunus Mountains to the immediate north. It was for years regarded as Germany’s noblest wine region and the best wines here (accounting for almost 80% of the vines grown in this region) are invariably Rieslings with strongly pronounced mineral qualities and more body than those of the Mosel or other German Rieslings. Pinot Noir takes second place with approximately 12% of the vines.
