The bouquet is taut, super-clean, wonderfully delineated with scents of citrus lemon, lemon curd, orange blossom and a judicious stroke of minerals. As you would expect, the palate is perfectly balanced and wonderfully poised. Given its tender age – it’s already showing a degree of complexity which runs from citrus lemon, saline, flint, the faintest soupçon of lime to orange zest and fresh ginger. Texturally, it’s on point and belies a wine of this value – there’s real depth and substance which will broaden over the next 3-6 years. Like the bouquet - this is taut and wonderfully fresh. Waves of energy and bucketloads of citrus saline which is a joy (very Margaret River). This should be filed under ‘a stonking bargain.’ Delicious in every sense. Served using Zalto Burgundy glassware which helps given its age. Decant for 20 mins or so and do not overchill…”

The Zalto Burgundy glass is recommended for all Pinot Noirs, designed almost specifically for Pinot’s delicate aromas. The aromas of Pinot Noir are often the most delicate, but when revealed can be the most enticing and pretty. The Zalto Burgundy glass is the widest of all the Zalto glasses providing the largest surface area for wine. This allows for rapid aeration, revealing all of the delicate spice, herb, floral, earth and berry aromas to be maximized. The narrower rim holding these aromas for an unparalleled experience of the elegant subtleties. The Zalto Burgundy is also very good for Nebbiolo, especially Barolo.

Pierro Chardonnay

Pierro Chardonnay is without question, a world-class wine and has won so many awards over the years. Moreover, it is well entrenched in the top three Chardonnays of Australia. Notwithstanding the above accolades, the highly respected American magazine Wine & Spirits voted the Pierro Chardonnay the best in Australia, which and if truth be known, does not come as a surprise to those in the know! Pierro Vineyard lies in the central Willyabrup sub region of Margaret River. The fully mature ‘Gin Gin’ clone Chardonnay vines are closely spaced which increases relative humidity. The vineyard is very stony; at night the heat radiates back into the clusters of Chardonnay effectively burning off excessive levels of malic acid. Low levels of malic acid in the Chardonnay fruit means that the complex aromas and flavours derive from malo-lactic fermentation do not smother fruit definition. The wine is vinified in Burgundian fashion with barrel fermentation in new French oak, lees stirring (bâttonage) and lees contact. Doctor Mike Peterkin is able to combine a fastidious attention to detail with a relaxed approach. Pierro Chardonnay possesses incredible intensity, generosity, complexity and concentration.

Perched all the way over on Australia’s most south westerly tip is Margaret River. A region that accounts for less than 5% of Australia’s wine production but is responsible for 20% of the premium wines and the lion’s share of awards. Probably best known as the region that produces some of the new world’s finest Cabernet, Margaret River specialises not only in red and white, Bordeaux style wines but the region is also gaining a reputation for premium Chardonnays that rival some of the best found in Burgundy. Deep Woods have scooped up a multitude of awards across their range, and another spectacular producer, House of Cards, have created a range of single vineyard wines of exceptional quality. Flowstone’s wines have been awarded 95 points or above and Stuart Pym continually displays his craftmanship in each and every vintage he produces.
