Not only do the Manetti family produce some of Tuscany's most awarded red wines, they also produce one of the most delicious Olive Oils in Tuscany! The olives, grown on the estate, are hand picked and pressed the same day to ensure they keep both their freshness and incredible fragrancy. This is a beautifully rich coloured oil with a grassy note and an intense, yet elegant peppery kick. Perfect for drizzling over everything from grilled meats to salads.

Producer

Nestled in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone just outside the town of Panzano, this leading Tuscan estate has been owned by the Manetti family since 1968. With 70ha of vineyards, all certified organic, Giovanni Manetti and his Cousin Marco are helped by consultant winemaker Franco Bernabei to produce some of Tuscany’s most awarded red wines. Gambero Rosso, Italy’s leading wine guide frequently recognises the wines with the top nod of Tre Bicchieri. Old vine fruit from south-western exposed vineyards at altitudes up to 400 metre above sea level provide the raw material for these much admired wines that undergo temperature controlled ageing in the estate’s bespoke winery built in 1998. The oak regime includes a mix of barriques and large barrels depending on the wine being made. The prized bottling, Flaccianello della Piave is the estate’s Supertuscan made with 100% sangiovese grapes from a single vineyard that is aged in French barriques. Made since 1981 this has staying power of 20 years or more. It is deeply coloured, intensely heady and perfumed, concentrated with dark fruit flavours and deliciously toasty from barrel age. This has won Gambero Rosso’s Tre Bicchieri many times over.

Region

The Tuscan wine region is situated on the Tyrrhenian coast, in the centre of Italy. Like much of the country it has a rich wine making history. Tuscany also has a number of appellations within the region including over thirty Denominazioni di origine controllata (DOC) and at least 7 Denominazioni di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG). Red grape varieties thrive here taking 70% of the region’s production. The Italian Sangiovese grape is king here and the quality of the wine it yields depends heavily on the exposure and particularly on the altitude at which it is planted. From Tuscany, we recommend either the smooth yet full bodied Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto 2012 or for something a little more decadent, the 2006 Fattoria Petrolo Galatrona made from 100% Merlot from the Petrolo Estate.
