Australian Future Classics

"With so many young, up and coming winemakers, boutique wineries and artisan producers appearing on the scene, as well as some already, well established names already hitting cult status, we take a look forward at today's producers that will become the future classics."

Time and time again we see the same names appearing on the list of great wines to come out of Australia and for very good reason. Names like Penfolds, Torbreck, Henschke and Wolf Blass as well as Cullen, Vasse Felix and Leewin Estate have been regular faces, considered for many years as the classics. But for how long will the list of classics feature the same giants of Australian wine? In a recent Decanter Magazine article naming the best Chardonnays outside of Burgundy, two thirds of the featured wines were from Australia, the recognition for the country's dominance in the new world is clearly evident, and the big names were of course heavily featured. But we are also starting to see a few of the new names appearing as well. On Decanter's list of the best Chardonnay was Deep Woods, a name that is beginning to repeatedly appear among Australia's greatest wines today and Winemaker Julian Langworthy has already been named as James Hallidays winemaker of the year. Julian's solo project Nocturne will undoubtedly follow suit. Wild Duck Creeks fate was sealed as a classic of the future when their Muck Duck was awarded 99 points by Robert Parker which shot them to fame and help to seal their cult status. Two Hands are one of one of Australia's beacons for artisan, single vineyard wines, whilst also having a great understanding of the commercial trade. Two Hands have gained a huge reputation on today's wine market and are responsible for several cult wines. With so many young, up and coming winemakers, boutique wineries and artisan producers appearing on the scene, as well as some already, well established names already hitting cult status, we take a look forward at today's producers that will become the future classics.
