95 Points - James Halliday

A tremendous volume of flavour, but does show hints of the cooler climate with touches of spice and licorice; again, the flavour thrusts through to the finish and after taste.

92 Points - Jay Miller

The 2005 Shiraz Eden Valley “Old Vine Collection” comes from a 50-year-old vineyard with small yields. It was aged for 20 months in new French oak hogsheads. Opaque purple-colored, it has an enticing perfume of wood smoke, spice box, leather, pepper, bacon, plum, and blueberry. This leads to a full-bodied, supple-textured, ripe wine with layered, spicy blue and black fruit flavors, excellent balance, and a long finish. Give it 3-5 years in the cellar and drink it through 2025.

Producer

Rob Gibson's wine interest began whilst working for Penfolds in Auckland, New Zealand back in 1974. On his return to Australia he began working in the Penfolds Cellar which started a long and successful career spanning 22 years under Penfolds tutelage.

In 1981 and 1982 the chief winemaker of Penfolds formulated a viticulture project aimed at selecting the very best quality Shiraz grapes for Grange Hermitage production. This ground-breaking work developing new assessments and discovering new information about the production of the very best Shiraz, led to the establishment of a dedicated viticulture department. The new systems connected the vineyard block characteristics at veraison, and again prior to harvest with the resultant wine characters and its value. He led this department as the Group Viticulturist until he left to start Gibson Wines.

He now runs the Gibson winery with his wife Anne and their knowledgeable team of wine enthusiasts. They have a vineyard in the Barossa Valley at Light Pass and one in the Eden Valley and also purchase grapes from the McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. With over 40 years in the wine industry Rob’s hand-crafted wines reflect expert site selection from across the Barossa Valley and a focus on producing balanced and flavourful wines.

Region

Eden Valley is a wine making region sharing a boundary with the Barossa Valley and is dotted with the rolling hills of the Barossa Ranges. The Eden valley competes with the Clare Valley for the top-spot in high-quality Riesling production and the grapes thrive in the cool climate of the region. The other varietal that is important to this area is Shiraz and this is responsible for some of Eden Valley’s most highly acclaimed wines – the styles differ from those produced in south eastern Australia in that they have riper and smoother tannins and more ripe black fruit aromas with sweet spice notes. The wines are extremely well-balanced and both the reds and whites garner a great deal of complexity during the ageing process. One of our favourite producers from this region is the Henschke Estate and we have older vintages of both the Keyneton Estate and the Cyril available that show the red wines of Eden Valley at their best.
