International Wine Challenge: Silver 2014
97 Points - Stuart McCloskey "By far, one of my all-time favourite Kiwi Sauvignon Blancs simply as this wine ‘stylistically’ has no equal. The fruit is hand picked from Matthews Lane vineyard ensuring each parcel of fruit is in perfect condition. The juice rests on yeast lees for 11 months in new 1,000 litre German oak fuder barrels, which adds an extraordinary level of complexity. The enormous size of the fuder translates to less wine contact with the barrel surface compared to smaller, more commonly used barrels. In addition, the fuder staves are thicker which means the temperature of ferment tends to be warmer resulting in the fruit characters gaining greater depth and complexity.
Immensely appealing from the start with ripe intense tropical and stone fruit flavours, honeysuckle, caramelised citrus. There’s an astonishing combination of super-ripeness and verve. The acidity is perfectly judged and for those readers worrying about the whopping oak barrels – Fear not as the oak is far from obvious which indicates the quality and concentration of the fruit. To put in the most banal of terms – This is a magical bottle of Sauvignon Blanc!"
Fuder wines are a new and very welcome premium label from the well known Sauvignon Blanc producer, Giesen. Fermented in a 1000 litre German oak Fuder, the wine is given extended contact with the yeast lees to build texture and complexity. Deliciously creamy-textured wine with nutty yeast lees characters adding complexity to ripe nectarine, peach and other stone fruit flavours. A complex, satisfying Sauvignon Blanc in a very appealing style.

New Zealand is split between the North Island and South Island and the Marlborough region is situated in the North of the South Island. The climate here is the hottest in the country meaning that this wine producing region is expanding quickly. Of course, Sauvignon Blanc does well here and is increasingly becoming more and more popular due to its naturally herbaceous character and lean and refreshing style much loved by Western wine drinkers. Wineries Greywacke and Dog Point both have delicious Sauvignon Blanc wines with typical Marlborough characteristics. Red wines, mainly Pinot Noir also grow well in this region and an excellent example of a Pinot Noir from this area is the Akitu Pinot Noir which comes highly recommended from Vinorium staff!
