100 Points - Stuart McCloskey

Wow what a bouquet – This is such a fantastic Cabernet Sauvignon which reminds me of a top Pauillac - Château Pontet Canet / Latour come to mind. The aromas soar from the glass - Exotic, seductive with vibrant scents of cassis, black currents, graphite and cedar. I detect a little menthol in the background. The palate is rich and coats every facet. The filigree framework of tannins are seamless and support the wine beautifully. There’s a beguiling sense of purity which is something rarely seen. The finesse, poise and focus is quite extraordinary. Overall, the wine is effortless with layer upon layer of perfectly ripe fruit. The complexity builds with time in the decanter and I cannot wait to come back to this wine over the next decade or two. I cannot see how this utterly majestic wine could possibly improve therefore, I have no alternative but concede perfection and add it to my legends list...

Producer

Founded in 2005 by Master Sommelier Greg Harrington and his wife Pam, Gramercy Cellars (based in Washingon, USA) has very strong influences from Bordeaux and the Rhône in both their approach to wine making and the varietals used. The idea behind Gramercy was to create a winery that was ‘focused on quality, integrity, and sustainability.’

Greg Harrington is one of the very few 130 people in the USA to pass his Master Sommelier Exams and was named ‘Best New Winemaker in Washington’ by Seattle Magazine in 2008 with Gramercy taking the title of ‘Best New Winery’.

Gramercy has also won a number of other awards including ‘Best New Winery in America’ by Food & Wine Magazine in 2010 and has been listed by Wine & Spirits Magazine as one of the “Top 100 Wineries in the World” in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Gramercy Cellars, Washington, USA

Region

Situated in the Northwest of the USA, Washington is known as the 2nd largest premium wine producer in the United States after California, with over 900 wineries located across the state.  The region produces good quality wines from a range of grape varieties and is planted with almost exactly a 50/50 split of red and white grapes. The most common are Riesling and Chardonnay for the whites and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah for the reds.  Two of our favourite producers from Washington are the Betz Family Winery and Gramercy Cellars
