It offers up a fragrant bouquet of cedar, spice box, pepper, espresso, wild blueberry, and blackberry. Medium to full-bodied, it exhibits some complexity, layers of savory black fruits, and a lengthy finish.

Henry's Drive wines, which are named after the owner of a 19th century mail coach that ran through the property which is situated in the Padthaway district of South Australia, around 180 miles south east of Adelaide. It is naturally cooler than the more northerly Barossa Valley or McLaren Vale but warmer and more consistent than Coonawarra, some 50 miles south, with which it shares a similar, former sea-bed geology.

The property is owned by the Longbottom family, who have been farmers in Padthaway since the 1940s. The first ‘Henry’s Drive’ vines were planted in 1992 and their first vintage came in 1998 which saw the potential of their wine making and what was achievable.

At Henry's Drive their wines are made using parcels of fruit taken from three different vineyards. A northern, central and southern vineyard consisting of different soil types, from black clay and limestone to deep sand and red loam, the combination of fruit from these three vineyards is what gives Henry’s Drive wines their regional characteristics. When picked the fruit is carefully graded with only the very best being selected for their wines which are made with minimal intervention helping them to display a length and longevity that are a true expression of their vineyards, region and variety.

Region

The Padthaway region of Australia is only 62 km long and 8k wide with a wine growing area of only 4000 hectares. The predominant wine varieties planted here are Shiraz, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon with the red varieties making up 50% of the total vineyard plantings. There are also increasing volumes of Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Pinot Gris wines being produced which show the regions ability to consistently produce quality wines across a broad range of grape varieties. Padthaway’s Chardonnays have earned a reputation based on their clean and pure fruit flavours. Equally high-quality red wines are produced here from grape varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.
