This wine carries the name of Stephen’s father, Cyril Henschke (1924-1979), as a tribute to one of Australia’s outstanding winemaking pioneers, renowned for old-vine single-vineyard and quality varietal table wines. Cyril planted cabernet sauvignon at Henschke’s Eden Valley vineyard in the 1960s.
Medium-bodied; very elegant, finely structured style; a subtle interplay of blackcurrant, earth, olive and fine French oak; long, balanced finish. It exhibits a Bordeaux-like austerity as well as aromas and flavours of tobacco smoke, liquorice, spice box, red currants, black currants, and sweet cherries. Delightful!

Stephen and Prue Henschke of Henschke Wines are winemaking and viticultural legends, from the cool region of South Australia's Eden Valley. Fifth generation owners at the estate, this husband and wife team, now supported by their children continue to produce wines of impeccable stature including the world famous Hill of Grace single vineyard Shiraz from vines more than 150 years of age.
Stephen and Prue have won numerous awards in their fields, the pinnacle being named joint International Red Winemaker of the year. As head winemaker, Stephen embraces traditional winemaking techniques along with more quality controlled approaches he learnt whilst studying for his postgraduate degree at Geisenheim, Germany. Prue on the other hand focuses on sustainable viticulture, training techniques and trials with organic and biodynamic practices. A range of wines are made at the estate including both red and white of which there are varietals as well as blends. The Hill of Grace is on a par with Penfolds Grange, attracting the same super premium price tag.The Cyril and Euphonium however are excellent examples of their style offering superb value for money too. Cyril is a Bordeaux blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon fruit in homage to the life and work of Stephen’s father who bought the vineyard in the 1960s where this grape variety along with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are planted.
Situated in South Australia, 60 kilometres northwest of Adelaide, lies the Barossa Valley which has been producing wine since 1842 and these days is recognised as Australia’s quintessential wine region. The hot climate mixed with the ironstone and sandstone soil in the valley, makes excellent growing conditions for grapes and in particular, Shiraz (or Syrah) which classically is full bodied with earthy and spicy notes. Over the last 15 years there has also been an increased interest in the other red Rhone varietals Grenache and Mourvedre. The non-irrigated old vineyards on the cooler west side of the valley are the most treasured and provide fruit for Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds Grange among many other top-quality bottlings.
