Owner Greg Hobbs jokes that the 2015 Gregor Shiraz is their "big-production wine," because he bottles 500-600 cases annually. The grapes are picked a bit earlier than those for the 1905 Shiraz and then air-dried on racks before being crushed and fermented. Scents of smoke and black pepper emerge on the nose of this fantastically concentrated elixir. It's full-bodied and unabashedly rich, with notes of cracked pepper, chocolate and dark fruit supported by silky tannins and a long finish. It should drink well for a decade or more.

Hobbs Vintners vineyard is home to some of the Barossa’s oldest Shiraz, planted at the turn of the last century (1905). The vineyard is nestled in the cool, beautiful Barossa Ranges, where the climate and distinct soil structure provide ideal conditions to produce fruit of unique quality. Greg and Alison Hobbs produce all their wines from grapes grown on their small,15 acre of vineyard. Yields are low resulting in an annual production of 1,500 cases (across the full range). Their ‘top’ wines, Gregor, 1905 and Tango (Shiraz / Viognier blend) are made in minuscule quantities of 130 to 300 cases. Greg and Allison collaborate with winemakers Peter Schell (of Spinifex) and Chris Ringland to create their wines, spearheaded by a powerful trio of old vine Barossa Shiraz.

Region

Situated in South Australia, 60 kilometres northwest of Adelaide, lies the Barossa Valley which has been producing wine since 1842 and these days is recognised as Australia’s quintessential wine region. The hot climate mixed with the ironstone and sandstone soil in the valley, makes excellent growing conditions for grapes and in particular, Shiraz (or Syrah) which classically is full bodied with earthy and spicy notes. Over the last 15 years there has also been an increased interest in the other red Rhone varietals Grenache and Mourvedre. The non-irrigated old vineyards on the cooler west side of the valley are the most treasured and provide fruit for Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds Grange among many other top-quality bottlings.
