96++ Points - Stuart McCloskey “The bouquet is fascinating and far from your bog-standard Aussie Sauvignon Blanc – Fresh cut garden mint, lime zest, lemongrass, warmth from freshly grated ginger are wrapped in a floral embrace (a touch of the French oak on the finish). Minutes later, ginger and orange marmalade which is heavenly. The palate feel reminds me of an expensive Bordeaux wine as there’s a lovely weightiness (slightly waxy). This is a very expressive wine, one which delivers depth, complexity and deserves some bottle age to truly shine. A rare, sophisticated new world Sauvignon Blanc which begs the question – why are there so few? This is an outstanding wine. Brilliant. Do not overchill and decant for an hour. Serve using Zalto Bordeaux glassware. Drink now to 2026…”

96+ Points – Magdalena Sienkiewicz "Expressive perfume filled with gooseberry, mandarin oil, lemongrass and a lovely lift from citrus blossom. Minerals and spices emerge with aeration. I love the mouthcoating texture of the Three Card Monte which is incredibly satisfying. Rich flavours of grapefruit, lemon, lime and cantaloupe melon linger on the palate with impressive intensity. The finish is super long, filled with more citrus, minerals and warming spices. Deeply savoury sensations linger for minutes. This is a serious Sauvignon Blanc with power and sophistication. Sampled without decanting and using Zalto Bordeaux glassware, which brings out more savoury complexities I find."

Technical: 50% of the grapes were fermented on skins for three days with wild yeast and the other 50% fermented on skins for seven days with wild yeast. Racked to French oak, 20% new, for 11 months.

Zalto Denk-Art Universal Glass

Due to further lockdowns in Austria we are experiencing extended delays with our Zalto orders.

We are currently expecting our next delivery to arrive late August 2021.

The Zalto Universal glass is recommended for richer, oaked Sauvignon Blancs such as Hughes & Hughes Barrel & Skins, white Graves or Semillon/Sauvignon blends as well as young and non-vintage Champagne. The Zalto Universal is a very good 'all-rounder', designed for all types of wine but in our opinion may not maximize the potential of certain wines quite as much as the Bordeaux or Burgundy glass.

House of Cards was established in 2011 after owners Elizabeth and Travis returned to Yallingup from travelling overseas where Travis completed vintages in New Zealand and Canada. Their goal for the winery was simple; to passionately create single vineyard wines of exceptional quality. Their wine is handmade onsite using traditional winemaking practices including hand plunging and manual basket pressing. House of Cards are 100% organic and arguably, they are some of the best value wines you will find in Margaret River.

Margaret River

"The list of awards given to this tiny area in Australia’s most isolated region is endless and it’s no wonder that Margaret River is dominating Australia’s premium sector.."

Perched all the way over on Australia’s most south westerly tip is Margaret River. A region that accounts for less than 5% of Australia’s wine production but is responsible for 20% of the premium wines and the lion’s share of awards. Probably best known as the region that produces some of the new world’s finest Cabernet, Margaret River specialises not only in red and white, Bordeaux style wines but the region is also gaining a reputation for premium Chardonnays that rival some of the best found in Burgundy. Deep Woods have scooped up a multitude of awards across their range, including gold medals and a staggering 98 points awarded for their Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2017. Nocturne’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is receiving plenty of recognition and all but one of Flowstone’s wines have been awarded 95 points or above. The list of awards given to this tiny area in Australia’s most isolated region is endless and it’s no wonder that Margaret River is dominating Australia’s premium sector.

Lovely stuff. If you like white Bordeaux or Dog Point Section 94 then this is for you. Alas, the bottle we enjoyed over an an alfresco lunch in the sun didn’t benefit from the recommended hour in the decanter. Apologies Stu. One to buy again.
