Supple, radiant and inviting, La Dame has all the potential to be an overachiever in this vintage. Today, it is quite open, and, even more importantly, flat-out delicious. In some moments, La Dame is rather nuanced, while at other times it is a bit more potent. It will be interesting to see what aging in bottle brings, but one thing is certain; the 2016 La Dame is a stellar wine. Don't miss it."

The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip, quite sturdy for a second wine, and lightly spiced with a sprinkling of white pepper on the surprisingly persistent finish. Excellent."

Producer

Château Montrose is one of the leading estates in St.Estéphe and was founded in 1778. The vineyards are perfectly located on a deep gravel bank only 800 metres from the Gironde Estuary creating the perfect microclimate and helping to protect the vines against frost. Between 1962 and 2006 the Château was owned by Jean-Louis Charmolue until it was sold to its current owners, Martin and Olivier Bouygues (Owners of the well-known French construction firm Bouygues). The wines are typically a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and are matured in oak barrels for 18 months. They tend to be high in tannins and therefore possess excellent ageing potential.

Region

Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand. 

Many top wines are sold ‘En Primeur’ meaning that they are sold in the barrel prior to bottling. Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
