The 2016 Clinet, a blend of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, was cropped at 49hl/ha and matured in 70% new oak. It has a quintessential Pomerol bouquet of vibrant floral aromas, black cherries and hints of Christmas cake and truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and very harmonious and refined. The sample at the château showed a touch more backbone than the one at the London UGC tastings, offering plenty of blackberry and black olive notes and then turning saline toward the dense, muscular finish. A classy, sophisticated Clinet that will reward those with the nous to cellar it for several years. Outstanding.

Producer

One of the smaller Bordeaux estates, Château Clinet is located in Pomerol on the Right Bank. With other famous châteaux such as Châteaux Trotanoy, L’Eglise Clinet and Clos L’Eglise so close by, it is clear to see that these vineyards are set on fantastic terroir. For the 1989 and 1990 vintages, Robert Parker awarded these wines 100 points, saying that these vintages of Château Clinet were akin to wines from Châteaux Pétrus, Lafleur and Le Pin and due to this, the ‘89 and ’90 reached similar prices to these châteaux. The vineyards are made up of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Region

Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand. 

Many top wines are sold ‘En Primeur’ meaning that they are sold in the barrel prior to bottling. Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
