This has a dense, oyster shell tinged bouquet with lifted blackberry, black olive and a touch of wet sand. Quite complex and well defined. The medium-bodied palate has a chewy entry, but very fine structure with fully ripe tannins, blackcurrants, raspberry, spice and a little leather. Very focused on the finish. This represents a very good performance from Kirwan.

Château Kirwan is situated in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, on one of the highest points in Margaux and is classified as one of the one of fourteen Troisièmes Crus (Third Growths). The château was bought in 1910 by by Sir John Collingwood a well-known British négociant of the Bordeaux wine trade. The name ‘Kirwan’ come from his Irish son-in-law, Mark Kirwan. By 1904 the property had fallen into disrepair and was sold at auction, only to be snapped up by Schroeder & Schyler (another team of négociants) who continue managing the small, 35 hectare estate today. The vineyard of Chateau Kirwan is planted to 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. In 1993, the property began producing a second wine, Les Charmes de Kirwan.

Region

Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand. 

Many top wines are sold ‘En Primeur’ meaning that they are sold in the barrel prior to bottling. Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
