92 Points - Neal Martin "The 2016 Les Cruzelles, Denis Durantou’s other Lalande de Pomerol after La Chenade, was bottled around the same time, at the end of May 2018. It has a slightly more savory bouquet than the La Chenade, featuring scents of black cherry and lavender plus light notes of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, grippy tannin. There is a symmetry and tension about this Les Cruzelles that I love. It’s a tad closed at the moment, but it will open in its own time. "Give it a chance to mellow," says Durantou. Sage advice.”

Château Les Cruzelles is located in Pomerol, on the Right Bank of the Gironde Estuary. The estate is owned by the utterly brilliant winemaker, Denis Durantou who is best known for also owning Chateau L’Eglise Clinet, which lies just 1km away from Château Les Cruzelles. The vineyards at Château Les Cruzelles are planted with 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc and the annual production is very small, approximately 2000 cases per annum.
Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand.
Many top wines are sold ‘En Primeur’ meaning that they are sold in the barrel prior to bottling. Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
