Château Montlabert 2014 (Case 12x75cl)

91 Points - Antonio Galloni "The 2014 Montlabert is racy and sumptuous in the glass. Sweet rose petal and spice notes add aromatic lift and overall presence. The more fragrant, delicate side of Saint-Émilion comes through nicely. Given the wine's midweight structure, I would prefer to drink the 2014 sooner rather than later. There is good depth, but I find the 2014 less explosive and energetic than it was from barrel. The blend is 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc from sandy/gravelly soils on a bed of clay. Hubert de Boüard is the consulting winemaker. Tasted two times."

92 Points - Stuart McCloskey "Owned by the famous Saint-Julien property, Château Beychevelle, with the incredibly talented Hubert de Bouard of Château Angelus overseeing each vintage. Notes of chocolate, black cherries, herbs, and spice emerge from this medium bodied wine. This is very cohesive with well-integrated oak, classic in style on the finish that is long and sophisticated."

Château Montlabert is situated in the St. Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. This beautiful château was a hunting lodge in the 1700’s and the name originates from the founder of the estate, Michel Descazes Montlabert. Today the property is owned by the Castel Group, who also own Château Beychevelle in Saint-Julien.

The group hired the well-known Hubert de Bouard (manager of Château Angelus) as their consultant and his first vintage was the 2010. The vineyards are planted with around 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.  Château Montlabert produces around 3,100 cases per annum.

Château Montlabert, Saint-Émilion, France

Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand.

Many top wines are sold ‘En Primeur’ meaning that they are sold in the barrel prior to bottling. Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
