There are 2000 cases of 2005 Emigre, a blend of six grape varieties sourced from a range of Barossa sites designed to reflect a “palate” of the Valley. The blocks were cropped at 1 ton of fruit per acre. The composition of the blend is 30% Shiraz, 30% Grenache, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Mourvedre, with the balance Carignan and Muscadelle. The wine was aged from 18-20 months in new French oak. It offers a complex aromatic array of smoky oak, damp earth, pencil lead, clove, pepper, cassis, and blueberry. Supple-textured and very intense, the wine exhibits spicy red and black fruits, with hints of mint and chocolate in the background. It is layered, opulent, and long while maintaining its elegant personality. Give it 5-7 years in the cellar and drink it through 2025.

Jonathan Maltus is the first Englishman in Bordeaux to win a perfect score from Robert Parker for his 2010 Château Le Dôme (we sold out at £2,200 per case). The hallmark of his work is producing wines of great complexity and longevity - a point proved by the recent hike in scores for his older 2005 vintage of the same, recently re-tasted and awarded 98 points. Jonathan is also known for Château Teyssier, Les Astéries and Vieux Château Mazerat in Bordeaux alone – efforts for which he was awarded an OBE in 2016.

Not content with bringing Château Le Dome, Château Teyssier and its satellites to the forefront of modern winemaking in Bordeaux, Jonathan decided to try his hand in Australia by purchasing small blocks of old vines in the Barossa Valley in 2001. These small blocks were in the northern ‘arc’ of the Barossa, focusing on 120 year-old dry-grown vines that have never suffered from phylloxera.

In fact, Jonathan has gone to the extreme by importing all his winemaking equipment from St-Emilion: wooden vats, barrels, triage tables etc. as their aim is to produce wines of outstanding stature to set them apart from all the rest...
Situated in South Australia, 60 kilometres northwest of Adelaide, lies the Barossa Valley which has been producing wine since 1842 and these days is recognised as Australia’s quintessential wine region. The hot climate mixed with the ironstone and sandstone soil in the valley, makes excellent growing conditions for grapes and in particular, Shiraz (or Syrah) which classically is full bodied with earthy and spicy notes. Over the last 15 years there has also been an increased interest in the other red Rhone varietals Grenache and Mourvedre. The non-irrigated old vineyards on the cooler west side of the valley are the most treasured and provide fruit for Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds Grange among many other top-quality bottlings.
