Score:94

While the deep plum/ruby/garnet-tinged 2003 Shiraz Command is slightly less nuanced than the 2002, it is just as powerful and full-bodied, offering copious quantities of fruit, glycerin, tannin, and muscle. This chewy, rich offering appears to be on a faster evolutionary track than its 2002 counterpart.

Producer

The Elderton Vineyard, originally planted by Samuel Elderton Tolley in 1894, was planted predominantly with Shiraz; however in the early 1940s, Samuel decided to diversify and thus established some of the earliest planted Cabernet Sauvignon in the Barossa Valley.

There are two blocks on the property which they believe to be planted in the 1940s, and both of these offer an outstanding viticultural resource to Elderton. Year in, year out, they both manage to produce an outstanding quality (albeit incredibly small) crop of densely coloured and richly flavoured grapes. Today, they believe them to be amongst some of the oldest plantings anywhere in the world, certainly older than most in the Napa Valley and Bordeaux.

Region

Situated in South Australia, 60 kilometres northwest of Adelaide, lies the Barossa Valley which has been producing wine since 1842 and these days is recognised as Australia’s quintessential wine region. The hot climate mixed with the ironstone and sandstone soil in the valley, makes excellent growing conditions for grapes and in particular, Shiraz (or Syrah) which classically is full bodied with earthy and spicy notes. Over the last 15 years there has also been an increased interest in the other red Rhone varietals Grenache and Mourvedre. The non-irrigated old vineyards on the cooler west side of the valley are the most treasured and provide fruit for Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds Grange among many other top-quality bottlings.
