2002 represents a fabulous vintage in McLaren Vale, which has certainly supported the wines longevity. I imagine the 02 ‘JSM’ started life as a brute. Today, time has served it well and unlocked the elegance and complexity, which I imagine was impossible to find in its earlier years. Blackberries, ripe plums, crème de cassis and the slightest whiff of bacon fat are all singing beautifully. The wine is densely layered, succulent, ripe and offers a multilayered mouthfeel. Very delicious, pure – nothing OTT. In fact, and to be perfectly candid, a delightful surprise. (Decant for 1-2 hours)
McLaren Vale is situated south of The Barossa Valley in South Eastern Australia. The local climates vary enormously according to altitude and exposure to the cooling sea breezes. Red grapes flourish here due to the warm climate and varied soil type and the region is best known for soft and juicy Shiraz, old-vine Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The climate is similar to that of the Mediterranean climate with four clear seasons. We can highly recommend the producers Kay Brothers, Clarendon Hills and Shirvington Estate from whom we have some fantastic wines.
