Score:91

Kaesler’s top Shiraz cuvees begin with the 2007 Old Vine Shiraz, sourced from a 44 year old estate vineyard and aged for 18 months in French oak. Deep purple in color, the expressive nose offers up toast, smoked meat, game, lavender, and blueberry. Structured, firm, and a bit compact on the palate in the style of the vintage, it has attractive flavors but a more forward personality than its counterpart from 2004 and 2005. Drink it between 2012 and 2020.

Producer

The Kaesler Vineyards were established in 1893. The family, sprung from Silesian pioneers who came to the Barossa Valley in the 1840s, and took up 96 acres in 1891. They cleared the scrub and planted out the entire holding with Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro (Mourvedre) and White Hermitage vines.

In 1999, renowned Australian winemaker Reid Bosward bought Kaesler and set about developing its portfolio, focusing in particular on its single vineyard wines. Many of Kaesler’s vineyards contained gnarled, dry-grown Shiraz vines dating back to 1893 - these vines are some of the largest holdings of nineteenth century plantings in the world and provide the backbone of the intense wines they produce today.

Kaesler produces bold estate wines representative of the Barossa Valley and are best known for their multi award winning 'Old Bastard Shiraz' listed as ‘Outstanding’ in the internationally regarded Langton’s Classification Guide.

Kaesler Wines

Region

Situated in South Australia, 60 kilometres northwest of Adelaide, lies the Barossa Valley which has been producing wine since 1842 and these days is recognised as Australia’s quintessential wine region. The hot climate mixed with the ironstone and sandstone soil in the valley, makes excellent growing conditions for grapes and in particular, Shiraz (or Syrah) which classically is full bodied with earthy and spicy notes. Over the last 15 years there has also been an increased interest in the other red Rhone varietals Grenache and Mourvedre. The non-irrigated old vineyards on the cooler west side of the valley are the most treasured and provide fruit for Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds Grange among many other top-quality bottlings.
