The Les Forts de Latour is a blend of 61.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 0.5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. It has a strict, clinical bouquet with blackberry, boysenberry, crushed stone and a strong graphite seam. The palate is very precise on the entry, a little grainy in texture with fine minerality. It is unashamedly classic, nothing out of place, a second wine with its shirt tucked in and its tie done right up to the collar...and I like it for that.

Château Latour

Château Latour is one of the most famous châteaux in the world and dates back at least to the 14th century. It is rated as a First Growth under the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Latour lies in the appellation of Pauillac, just 300 metres from the banks of the Gironde. The Latour blend is made up with 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 2% of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Château Latour has 78 hectares of vineyards, of which over half is named l'Enclos and lies next to the château. This is used solely for its grand vin which has an annual production of 18,000 cases. The second wine is called Les Forts de Latour and is made up of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot with an average annual production of 11,000 cases.

Region

Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand. 

Many top wines are sold ‘En Primeur’ meaning that they are sold in the barrel prior to bottling. Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
