94 Points - Robert Parker

The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Serpico (aged 12 months in new American hogsheads as well as small French barrels) comes from the Willunga district in the southern sector of McLaren Vale, near the ocean. It exhibits a dense purple color in addition to an extraordinary bouquet of smoke, blueberries, black raspberries, and cassis. Superbly endowed with admirable purity, sweet tannin, a floral/fruity component, and a fabulously layered, concentrated mid-palate as well as finish, it is one of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons to ever emerge from South Australia. It should age well for 10-15 years.

Producer

"For a winery only established in 1999 and dedicated to hand-crafted artisanal wines, Mitolo has consistently been a revelation in my tastings. Thanks to owner Frank Mitolo and his brilliant winemaker Ben Glaetzer, the quality has been truly splendid.” Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, November 2005

Italian family roots are the inspiration behind Frank Mitolo’s interest and passion for both good food and great wine. He founded Mitolo Wines in 1999 with the dream of producing wines of purity, individuality, elegance and power, and together with the enthusiasm and knowledge of his friend and partner Ben Glaetzer (an award winning winemaker), alongside an uncompromising commitment to quality, they have created one of Australia’s most awarded wineries receiving much international recognition and acclaim.

With Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon fruit sourced from both the McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley Frank and Ben continue to produce an impressive and consistently high-scoring range of single-vineyard red wines, all the while striving to top their already impressive achievements.

Mitolo Wines

Region

McLaren Vale is situated south of The Barossa Valley in South Eastern Australia. The local climates vary enormously according to altitude and exposure to the cooling sea breezes. Red grapes flourish here due to the warm climate and varied soil type and the region is best known for soft and juicy Shiraz, old-vine Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The climate is similar to that of the Mediterranean climate with four clear seasons. We can highly recommend the producers Kay Brothers, Clarendon Hills and Shirvington Estate from whom we have some fantastic wines.
