94 Points - Robert Parker

Produced from relatively young vines some of whose fruit is sold to Seppelt and Penfolds, the 2004 Shiraz Greenock possesses an opaque purple color in addition to a gorgeously rich nose of toasty, smoky oak interwoven with black raspberry, blackberry, and cassis fruit flavors. Full-bodied, rich, and spicy, with no hard edges.

Producer

The Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes near the village of Greenock in the Barossa Valley since 1853 and are one of the region’s leading grape-growing families. After six generations of growing grapes, winemakers and seventh generation family members, Troy and Tony Kalleske established the Kalleske winery and made the first Kalleske wine. The family’s 120 acre vineyard is planted with Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Mataro, Petit Verdot, Durif, Viognier, Tempranillo and Zinfandel and is low yielding with grapes grown both organically and biodynamically. Since the first wine release in 2004, Kalleske has quickly gained a reputation for producing top-quality, hand-crafted wines and they continue to make genuine estate grown wines of individuality and excellence.

Region

Situated in South Australia, 60 kilometres northwest of Adelaide, lies the Barossa Valley which has been producing wine since 1842 and these days is recognised as Australia’s quintessential wine region. The hot climate mixed with the ironstone and sandstone soil in the valley, makes excellent growing conditions for grapes and in particular, Shiraz (or Syrah) which classically is full bodied with earthy and spicy notes. Over the last 15 years there has also been an increased interest in the other red Rhone varietals Grenache and Mourvedre. The non-irrigated old vineyards on the cooler west side of the valley are the most treasured and provide fruit for Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds Grange among many other top-quality bottlings.

Very big wine, lovely thick rich mouthfeel with notes of black fruits, peppery spice and oak. For me lacking a bit of complexity on the palate but plenty of life left and a very good QPR.
