This wine is produced from a vineyard owned by Tim and Angela Coddington, whose grapes have contributed to the blend of Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay since 1998. It is a vineyard that produces very rich and unctuous Chardonnay that was believed could make an excellent single vineyard wine. In 2006, the team decided to give Coddington single vineyard status to reflect this vineyard’s unique character. The 2011 Coddington shows the typical ripe, peachy fruit we expect from this site and we also see depth and layers of concentration due to the tiny cropping level. The palate is forward with a luxurious creamy texture and lovely balancing acidity.

Stuart McCloskey

Producer

1944 was an auspicious year for the wine industry in Kumeu, Western Auckland. This is when the Brajkovich family of Croatian extraction bought their eponymous estate, which now makes the most outstanding chardonnays to leave New Zealand, let alone the North Island. A real family affair, all of the founder’s children are involved in some aspect of the business, but winemaking is in the charge of Michael Brajkovich who also has the distinguished achievement of becoming New Zealand’s first Master of Wine. Since taking control of this function in 1982, he has set a benchmark that is yet to be surpassed with five unique expressions of chardonnay that are relatively cheap when compared to Burgundian offerings. These wines are true bargains!
