94 Points - James Suckling

Bright and citrusy style with gently toasty oak in a modern guise. This has a sense of pristine fruit ripeness, opening to white-peach aromas and a flinty edge. The palate's smoothly crafted, and the acidity keeps everything attractive in terms of beautiful stone-fruit flavors that sit in a sorbet-like texture. So much great freshness and resolve.

Taste & Aroma

Chassagne Montrachet without the eye watering price-tag! The ’14 has everything to offer to the drinker – Expressive aromatics, a palate which is exquisitely balanced, clean and very fresh. This is really showing off Kumeu’s pedigree. Drinking beautifully now but will handsomely repay cellaring (10+ years).

95 Points, Stuart McCloskey

With a savory, struck match undercurrent, the 2014 Coddington Chardonnay has a core of lemons, fresh grapefruit and yuzu with a touch of pineapple. Medium bodied and still quite tightly wound at this youthful stage, it gives and refreshing acid backbone throughout the long finish. It should age beautifully over the next 6-8 years+.

Producer

1944 was an auspicious year for the wine industry in Kumeu, Western Auckland. This is when the Brajkovich family of Croatian extraction bought their eponymous estate, which now makes the most outstanding chardonnays to leave New Zealand, let alone the North Island. A real family affair, all of the founder’s children are involved in some aspect of the business, but winemaking is in the charge of Michael Brajkovich who also has the distinguished achievement of becoming New Zealand’s first Master of Wine. Since taking control of this function in 1982, he has set a benchmark that is yet to be surpassed with five unique expressions of chardonnay that are relatively cheap when compared to Burgundian offerings. These wines are true bargains!
