93 Points - James Suckling
Showing impressive purity and focus right from the very first impression, this provides flinty lemons, yellow grapefruit and peach and melon fruits that all sit in perfect, harmonious layers on the nose. The palate's assertively flavored, meanwhile, with lemons, peaches and pineapple, as well as hints of creamed honey and just the right acid balance, which allows this wine to sit long and fresh. Oak is a mere subtext here; it's all about pure, fresh fruit.
We are lucky enough to house some of their library vintages dating back to 2006 however, and albeit an infant, the 2014 is on a different level. Barrel matured for 10 months in 100% French oak, of which 20% was new. After a further 6 months ageing in stainless steel tanks, the wine was bottled in August 2015. A little retrained at first however, twenty / thirty minutes in a decanter brings the Estate Chardonnay alive. There is always a little more fatness to the Estate wines however, this is far from clumsy. Burgundy-like – layers of minerals, clean and tensile on the entry. Such energy and utterly brilliant for less than twenty quid!
The Auckland wine region lies at the head of the North Island in New Zealand and is one of the country’s most noted wine regions. Known for its Chardonnays, Merlots and Cabernet Sauvignons. One of the region’s most successful producers are the Brajkovich family who run the Kumeu River Winery and are responsible for the country’s finest Chardonnays. We have a small selection of this boutique producer's wines available and all come highly recommended.
