96 Points - James Suckling

This vineyard sits above Mate's Vineyard and has a combination of ripeness with vibrant acid-fuelled energy. The nose heads into some quite exotic territory, showing fine limes and lemon zest, floral and perfumed ethereal aromas and some richer orange fruits. The palate's succulent and curvaceous; it really offers fleshy impact on first sip and then whips into a taut, long finish. Clever wine from a great site.

Taste & Aroma

To my favourite and strictly one for the cellar as this is the tautest, tense Kumeu out of the quartet. Minerals and stone fruits come to life with a little aeration and the ’14 shows great balance and class from start to finish. Sadly, and like Maté’s, we only have 60 bottles therefore, please do not disappoint yourselves and delay snatching up a few of these utterly magnificent bottles.

The 2014 Hunting Hill Chardonnay has a white peach, spiced apple and honeyed pear nose with hints of ginger, brioche and almonds. Medium-bodied, the silken textured palate gives layer upon layer of stone fruit and savoury flavors plus excellent persistence.

Producer

1944 was an auspicious year for the wine industry in Kumeu, Western Auckland. This is when the Brajkovich family of Croatian extraction bought their eponymous estate, which now makes the most outstanding chardonnays to leave New Zealand, let alone the North Island. A real family affair, all of the founder’s children are involved in some aspect of the business, but winemaking is in the charge of Michael Brajkovich who also has the distinguished achievement of becoming New Zealand’s first Master of Wine. Since taking control of this function in 1982, he has set a benchmark that is yet to be surpassed with five unique expressions of chardonnay that are relatively cheap when compared to Burgundian offerings. These wines are true bargains!
