96 Points - James Suckling
This top bottling from the oldest vines is a powerful wine wound into a complex yet contained mode. It has plenty of savory hazelnut and biscuit aromas that combine with orange hints and flinty moments in the glass. The palate's fuller than the others, really fleshy and packed with peach flavors. A wine that demonstrates a sense of weight as it heads to the convincing finish.
One of three single vineyard wines - Maté's was planted in 1990 and the ’14 spent the same 10 months in French oak, of which 30% was new. Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW of the Wine Advocate awarded 94+ Points and describes Maté's as delivering “wonderful intensity with fragrant lemon, orange blossom and grapefruit aromas plus crushed stones, flint, toast and yeast extract hints. Medium-bodied, the palate is filled with vibrant citrus flavours and great acidity, finishing with excellent persistence.”
For me, this is akin to a great Grand Cru Burgundy – The palate is extremely intense however, the acidity is judged perfectly. This is clearly built for the long term and will reward those with a little patience, however, and to the bad news? We only have 60 bottles…

1944 was an auspicious year for the wine industry in Kumeu, Western Auckland. This is when the Brajkovich family of Croatian extraction bought their eponymous estate, which now makes the most outstanding chardonnays to leave New Zealand, let alone the North Island. A real family affair, all of the founder’s children are involved in some aspect of the business, but winemaking is in the charge of Michael Brajkovich who also has the distinguished achievement of becoming New Zealand’s first Master of Wine. Since taking control of this function in 1982, he has set a benchmark that is yet to be surpassed with five unique expressions of chardonnay that are relatively cheap when compared to Burgundian offerings. These wines are true bargains!
The Auckland wine region lies at the head of the North Island in New Zealand and is one of the country’s most noted wine regions. Known for its Chardonnays, Merlots and Cabernet Sauvignons. One of the region’s most successful producers are the Brajkovich family who run the Kumeu River Winery and are responsible for the country’s finest Chardonnays. We have a small selection of this boutique producer's wines available and all come highly recommended.
