This is the second label of the Super Tuscan producer Ornellaia and is a blend of 50% Merlot, 30% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is beautifully balanced and full-bodied with ripe black fruit flavours, a mouth-watering acidity and incredibly silky and refined tannins.

Taste & Aroma

Score:92

From the Ornellaia stable comes this beautiful red of impeccable breeding. An annual production of around half a million bottles doesn’t detract from the quality on offer; it demonstrates a good depth of dark fruit with accompanying dried herbs and spice. The mouthfeel is dense and quite smooth despite the tannins, with a delightful minty finish. Fine acidity ties everything together. Superb value considering it is well under the £20 mark.

James Button (Decanter Magazine)

Producer

This stunning Estate in Tuscany produces some seriously super-Tuscan wines, some amongst the greatest wines in Italy and even the world. Having just celebrated its 25th year of production, the winery's bottles are showing signs of increasing demand at auction as a result of their hard work and simple philosophies. The production philosophy of the Estate is based on the belief that wines must be the most faithful expression of the terroir that produces them. Their respect for the Estate's unique territory guides all aspects of production; limited quantities or ensure maximum quality, attention to every detail, selective hand-harvesting, micro-vinification and ageing.

Ornellaia

Region

The Tuscan wine region is situated on the Tyrrhenian coast, in the centre of Italy. Like much of the country it has a rich wine making history. Tuscany also has a number of appellations within the region including over thirty Denominazioni di origine controllata (DOC) and at least 7 Denominazioni di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG). Red grape varieties thrive here taking 70% of the region’s production. The Italian Sangiovese grape is king here and the quality of the wine it yields depends heavily on the exposure and particularly on the altitude at which it is planted. From Tuscany, we recommend either the smooth yet full bodied Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto 2012 or for something a little more decadent, the 2006 Fattoria Petrolo Galatrona made from 100% Merlot from the Petrolo Estate.
